DESCRIPTION
Ambrose Everett Burnside, (1824-1881), American soldier, businessman, politician and inventor, was a Union Army General in the American Civil War. Burnside was known for his facial whiskers and the term ‘Burnsides’ was used to describe them - later changed to ‘sideburns’. From “The Illustrated London News” dated Saturday April 12th, 1862. “The Illustrated London News” was the world’s first illustrated weekly newspaper and was first published in 1842 by Herbert Ingram.
